Income Tax Department Celebrates 167th Income Tax Day in Bhopal, Honours Excellence in Tax Administration, Sports and Education

The Income Tax Department commemorated the 167th Income Tax Day with a grand ceremony at the New Income Tax Building, Arera Hills, Narmadapuram Road, Bhopal. The event brought together senior officials, employees, students and distinguished guests to celebrate the department’s legacy, recognize outstanding achievements, and reaffirm the importance of voluntary tax compliance in nation-building.

The programme was attended by Ms. Mona Mohanty, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh), Bhopal, and Mr. Bijoy Kumar Panda, Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Bhopal, along with other senior officers and staff members of the department.

The celebrations commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by the reading of a video message from Mr. Ravi Agrawal, Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The message highlighted the Income Tax Department’s evolving role in promoting transparency, taxpayer-friendly services and strengthening the nation’s fiscal framework.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Mona Mohanty emphasized that paying taxes is not merely a statutory obligation but a meaningful contribution to India’s progress. She stated, “Paying taxes is not only a legal responsibility but also our contribution to the nation’s development. An aware and honest taxpayer lays the foundation for a strong economy and a developed India.” She underscored the significance of taxpayer awareness, voluntary compliance and public participation in achieving the vision of a developed nation.

During the programme, Mr. Ram Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of Income Tax (Administration), presented an overview of the department’s major achievements and notable initiatives during the past year. He highlighted the department’s continued efforts to enhance taxpayer services, improve administrative efficiency and strengthen compliance mechanisms.

The event also celebrated the achievements of departmental employees who have excelled in international sporting events. Ms. Shikha Chauhan was felicitated for winning medals in Kayak Slalom, while Mr. Shivraj Shankhla was honoured for his outstanding performance in shooting competitions. Their accomplishments were recognised for bringing pride to both the Income Tax Department and the country.

As part of the Income Tax Day celebrations, students of PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Bhopal, who performed exceptionally well in poster-making and elocution competitions, were presented with prizes and certificates. The school was also awarded a commemorative memento in recognition of its valuable support in organising the poster-making competition, speech competition and tree plantation drive conducted as part of the celebrations.

The event concluded with vibrant cultural performances by participants, adding a festive touch to the occasion. Speakers highlighted the pivotal role of the Income Tax Department in nation-building, the importance of honest tax compliance, and the need to strengthen public awareness about taxation. The programme ended with warm greetings and best wishes to all officers and employees on the occasion of the 167th Income Tax Day, reaffirming the department’s commitment to transparent governance and public service.
